» Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Cinema Event from Acid for Blood
This post is coming fairly late after the fact. I was too busy playing actually playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves to be more timely about writing this. On 5th October, I was one of several hundred people in four cities... [Read More]

Yeah, after the crash on the island, I became very aware that I was shooting people who not only spoke a different language, but were a different skin color. In this regard, adding the Nazi subplot, which automatically makes me think of their race atrocities, just made me all that more uncomfortable. Adding Nazis is one thing, adding them in a game where I am essentially only killing non-white persons? Ermmm...

As far as I could tell, the AI partners cannot die (though I only played through normal myself). Elena was a great character, though, as you note, I did not see the romantic connection. Watching the closing cinematic, I just rolled my eyes. If only one of the unlockable rewards was being able to play as her... alas.

i have been playing though the first one as well but i have been getting stuck on the badly designed parts of the game ie controlling the jetski and using Elena to shoot at things and the fixed camera controls i cant begin to tell you how annoying that is. the other thing i have found not to like is the hole you can duck and cover, but you cant aim and be covered. i am not all the way though the game though but i saw the Spoilers that you pointed out from the start of the game... if you liked this game you might want to try assassins creed. i played and beat that and had lots of fun. my only complaint for that game is the amount of grind you have to do. but lucky the second game isn't going to have that.
thanks for the review though you left out how you felt uncharted 2 stacked up.

I agree that the Nazi bit was pretty problematic for the reasons you describe. :-\ I didn't immediately think about that, so thanks for pointing it out.

Brinstar

I agree that the ducking and covering controls could be improved. There were a few times that I wanted to get in cover, but didn't have that happen immediately, and that was irritating. I felt that the jet ski bits were annoying at times, but for me personally, they were within acceptable limits. :-)

My thoughts on Uncharted 2 will come in a later post. I think this one is already too long, and Uncharted 2 deserves its own separate entry. :-)

I just played it recently (got a ps3 over the weekend). I played it on normal difficulty, and the shooting bits were too hard and the jumping bits too easy.

I've not finished it, but your comments on the relationship between Drake/Elena remind me of my comments about the Prince/Eleka in Prince of Persia. Guess I will finish out the zombie end parts and see how the story plays out.

after 25 years of gaming i can honestly say plot and romance differs little in the action/adventure type games. there just different pixels created to lure you up the mountain, over the kegs to rescue the princess. as long as the mountain looks good, and i got good control of the character to jump over the kegs, the rest matters little. he did have a nice pair of kicks tho, send that programmer to nike pls.

Funny you should mention the portrayal of Elena as a major plus. Not so coincidentally, Uncharted was written by Amy Hennig who gave an insightful podcast interview to 1up on exactly that topic of female characters in games:

The voice of Drake, Nolan North, also did voicework for Factions, Nightfall and 50 other games.

First thing, you can fire while in cover. You just press fire and aim with the second analog stick. It's a little more unwieldy, but helpful. It's the same mechanic as firing from the hip while running.

Great review, partially because I think you are the first person to write about that inconsitancy with the journal. I think the devlopers needed a way to convey the puzzle information and had the journal on hand, despite that he couldn't get the journal off the island afterwards.

Brinstar

Thanks for those links. I'll try to find some time to check out the podcast.

Thanks for the review. Actually I was interested in this game until I read this. Like you I had an idea that it was a basic RPG and what you have revelaed is that perhaps I would fidlike the game overall. (although the graphics and soundtrack info does interest me.) Thanks for reviewing honestly.
